CSUDH Campus in Carson Kicks Off Plans for $97MM Housing Project

The California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) campus in Carson is set to receive more student housing, as announced by the CSU Board of Trustees.

The upcoming Housing Phase 4 project is planned for a location north of the current residence hall, near the intersection of International Avenue and Birchknoll Drive, according to a recent report in Urbanize Los Angeles. With an estimated cost of $97 million, the project aims to accommodate up to 288 students in single, double, and triple residence rooms.

According to information provided on the CSUDH website, the residents will be organized into clusters of 36 students, supervised by a resident advisor. Each cluster will include a variety of room sizes, shared restrooms, an activity room, and small study areas. Connecting two clusters, a shared student lounge will be available, creating a sense of community among the students. These shared lounges will be interconnected across different floors, culminating in a large lounge on the ground floor that brings together 10 residential clusters. This design aims to promote close relationships among peers and neighbors.

The four-story building, designed by Steinberg Hart, will consist of two wings connected by a glass connector housing circulation areas and floor lounges. The exterior of the concrete-frame building will feature grey cement board siding, adorned with murals. The plans also include a multipurpose room, administrative spaces, shared laundry facilities, and a new courtyard providing open space for residents.

Additionally, the project includes the construction of a dining commons that will serve as a connection between the student housing and the central campus. The dining facility will accommodate 315 indoor seats and 50 outdoor seats.

The primary goal of the new dormitory is to offer affordable accommodations to low-income students, aiming to improve attendance and graduation rates. The housing is being funded by the State’s Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program for the 2022-2023 period, while the dining commons is receiving funding from a one-time State allocation from the 2021-2022 budget. The university also plans to seek bond funds to cover project expenses.

Construction of the dormitory and dining commons is scheduled to begin in February 2024, with an expected completion date in May 2026. C.W. Driver has been selected as the design-build contractor for the project.

This new development follows the completion of another housing complex at CSUDH in 2020, located on an adjacent site, and the addition of several academic buildings in the northern section of the campus.
