Hollywood Burbank Airport Breaks Ground on 355,000 SQFT Terminal

January 25, 2024 – Today, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority (BGPAA) broke ground on a safer, modern, and more convenient passenger terminal at Hollywood Burbank Airport. The project is known as “Elevate BUR.”

More than 250 community leaders, elected officials, and local stakeholders came together to celebrate the start of construction for this historic project.

“We’re excited to celebrate this milestone that brings us one step closer to a more elevated travel experience for our passengers,” said Frank Miller, Executive Director of Hollywood Burbank Airport. “I want to thank our Commissioners and the Burbank residents for their support, without which this project will not be possible.”

The new terminal will be located in the northeast quadrant of Hollywood Burbank Airport, across the airfield from the current terminal. The 355,000 square foot, 14 gate facility will replace the existing terminal to meet FAA standards and State building requirements, while improving the overall passenger experience with new features and amenities.

New Amenities:

  • A variety of options for shopping and dining
  • Upgraded restrooms
  • More space to move about
  • A new ticketing lobby
  • New baggage screening system
  • Updated TSA checkpoint

Improved Access & Safety: The design of the new facility adds distance between airport runways and the terminal building. It also includes updates to meet current earthquake design and ADA accessibility standards. There will be a 45,900-square-foot aircraft parking area for boarding and deplaning, a new parking structure with EV charging, and a new on-airport access Road.

Sustainable Solutions: The new terminal is designed to reduce the airport’s overall emissions and achieve a minimum of LEED Silver certification. Sustainable features include electrical vehicle charging, electric ground service equipment airside, water use reduction, and connections to the regional transit network.

Funding: No state, county or local funds from the Tri-Cities of Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena will be used to pay for the project.

Jacobs is providing project management services for Elevate BUR. The design-build team is led by Holder, Pankow, TEC, Joint Venture (HPTJV), with Corgan providing architectural services for the project in association with CannonDesign.

Construction of the new terminal is expected to take place from 2024 to 2026.
