UCLA’s New Mid-Wilshire Hospital in Los Angeles Looks to Bring a New Behavioral Health Center to the University System

By The Registry Staff

UCLA Health is undergoing a transformation by converting a former community medical center in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood, located around six miles east of the main UCLA campus in Westwood, into a world-class neuropsychiatric hospital. This cutting-edge facility will provide comprehensive behavioral health care services for patients of all ages, including adults, geriatrics, pediatrics, and adolescents. It will also feature a dedicated area specifically designed for crisis stabilization services.

The upcoming UCLA Health hospital is set to replace and expand upon the existing Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. To create a modern and integrated behavioral health campus offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, improvements will be made to an adjacent medical office building and parking structure.

The project, which began construction in March 2023, will be situated at 5900 Olympic Boulevard, previously the location of the now-closed Olympia Medical Center. This new campus will replace and build upon the 74-bed Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, which is currently situated on UCLA’s main campus in Westwood.

Leading the design-build team for the new hospital are HOK and McCarthy Building Companies. Their collaborative efforts will involve both new construction and the renovation of existing buildings. The ultimate goal is to create a unified care facility that caters to individuals grappling with mental and behavioral health challenges. The plans call for a total of 119 beds, surpassing the current 74 beds at the Resnick facility, and an additional 20 observational beds.

The Mid-Wilshire hospital will provide various supportive functions, including food service, imaging, a pharmacy, lab areas, and administrative offices. Moreover, therapy spaces will be available on each floor, while rooftop terraces and ground-level gardens will be accessible to both patients and staff, promoting a healing and serene environment. Spanning approximately 175,000 square feet, the hospital is expected to reach completion in Spring 2026. The estimated total cost of the project is $400 million.

Originally conceived as an alternative to constructing a new neuropsychiatric wing within the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center complex, which was projected to cost $1 billion and take 12 years to finish, this project aims to provide state-of-the-art facilities and care in a more efficient and timely manner.
