The University of Southern California is planning to add a new research facility to its Health Sciences Campus. According to planning documents recently filed with the City of Los Angeles, the university is planning a 220,000 square foot building that would be known as the Discovery and Translational Hub.

The Discovery and Translational Hub, planned at 1500 Eastlake Avenue, would include a seven-story building connecting to the neighboring Broad building. Overall, the project is estimated to cost approximately $315 million.

Inside, the LEED platinum building would provide numerous collaborative research spaces, with approximately 75 percent wet and 25 percent dry lab spaces. Further, the development would include an auditorium, various lab support spaces, a cafe, a bio-repository, a medical chemistry core lab and multiple collaborative meeting areas.

Designs for the project come from SmithGroup, with renderings revealing a contemporary building in glass, metal and terra-cotta. The building is also designed to flow with the surrounding health sciences building, according to project documents.

“With a focus on Health Sciences and Translational Medicine, the design merges the clean modern language of the existing campus with natural materials and forms. The massing of the building is the result of many existing forces and conditions on the site. At seven-stories, the building is a transition in height from the 12 stories of the Norris Research Center across the street to the existing five-story Broad CIRM building,” plans state.

Situated in the Health Sciences Campus, the project site is located near the junction of Interstates 5 and 10, to the northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Overall, the Health Sciences Campus is located just seven miles from USC’s original campus at University Park.

The USC Health Sciences Campus is located on 79 acres between Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights neighborhoods. The campus is also adjacent to the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center, which has been a partner of the university’s medical school since 1885, according to the university’s website.
