141-Unit Multifamily Development Planned at Site of Varden Hotel in Long Beach

By The Registry Staff

Downtown Long Beach is undergoing some change as the 1929 Varden Hotel prepares to make room for a new and exciting multifamily residential building. However, in a nod to the city’s rich history, the beloved rooftop sign of the Varden Hotel will be preserved and incorporated into the new development.

Located at 335 Pacific Ave., the Varden Hotel site will be redeveloped into an eight-story building that will feature 141 studio and one-bedroom apartments, according to a report from Urbanize LA. These units will range in size from approximately 380 to 770 square feet, offering a diverse range of options to cater to different lifestyle needs. The redevelopment plans also include convenient parking options on the ground level as well as an underground garage.

Leading architectural firm Studio One Eleven has been entrusted with the design of the project. The plans, which were recently presented to the Long Beach Cultural Heritage Commission, showcase a contemporary podium-type structure. The renderings highlight thoughtfully integrated amenities. These include a small courtyard on the third floor, a rooftop deck with views and several recreation rooms within the interior.

While the Varden Hotel building holds nearly a century of history, it is the historic rooftop sign that garnered significant attention from the Commission. The sign, which received landmark status in 1995, underwent restoration in 2017. As a tribute to its historical significance, the new development will keep the sign on its roof.

The Varden Hotel, named after circus performer Dolly Varden, has been part of the Long Beach community since 1929. The sign was then added in 1935, according to the hotel’s website.
