Construction has begun on Lulu’s Place, a sprawling 31-acre athletic and educational complex just north of Los Angeles International Airport in the city’s Westchester neighborhood. Billed as one of the largest philanthropic investments in the city’s history, the $150 million project is set to transform a long-vacant plot of land into a vibrant community hub, according to industry reports.

Named in honor of the late Carol “Lulu” Kimmelman, a former LAUSD teacher and USC tennis champion, Lulu’s Place will offer a wide array of sports and recreational facilities, including tennis courts, soccer fields, basketball courts, a playground, a dog park and more, the project website states. While open to the public, the complex will provide free or low-cost academic, athletic and wellness programs specifically for children in the surrounding community.

“Lulu was passionate about the potential for children to learn important life lessons both in the classroom and on the tennis court or sports field,” Lulu’s husband and one of the project leaders Doug Kimmelman said in a posted statement.

Lulu’s Place is a multifaceted project that aims to address the needs of the community holistically, according to industry reports. The facilities will include a learning lab operated by the TGR Foundation, empowering students to discover their passions and gain real-world skills. Additionally, the complex designed by Rios will feature a welcome center with program offices and athletic training spaces, as well as buildings providing healthcare services to student athletes.

The project’s location is situated between LAX’s north runway and St. Bernard High School, making it a highly visible landmark for millions of visitors and the 3,000 students attending schools within walking distance of the site.

Completion of Lulu’s Place is anticipated in approximately two years. The project was made possible through a collaboration among prominent institutions, philanthropic donors and foundations.
