Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs has pledged $50 million, the largest gift in Father Joe's Villages' 75-year history, to jump-start a plan to tear down the aging Joan Kroc Center in East Village and replace it with three residential towers holding more than 500 affordable units, including dedicated housing for older San Diegans now making up a third of the region's unsheltered population.
