Onni Group’s 600-Unit Residential Project Moved Ahead by Long Beach Planning Commission

A proposal that would bring 600 residential units to a site in Long Beach recently received approval from the city’s planning commission. Following a meeting on Thursday, Onni Group’s planned development of the Marina Shores shopping center is moving forward.

The project, also called Onni Marina Shores, would take shape at 6500 Pacific Coast Highway on a six-acre site. Overall, plans for the site include the construction of two five-story buildings with a range of studio to three-bedroom apartment units. The project would also provide 4,000 square feet of commercial space and offer a three-level podium garage capable of accommodating over 1,100 vehicles.

Designs for the project come from Solomon Cordwell Buenz, while Salt Landscape Architects is managing the landscape design. Plans show that the development will incorporate a central driveway, connecting Marina Drive and Pacific Coast Highway, maximizing accessibility and functionality. The project site is located in a transitional area between the Alamitos Bay Marina and the adjacent wetlands to the north. Drawing inspiration from the natural setting, the landscaping embraces the local environment. Podium-level terraces are inspired by the ebb and flow of high-tide and low-tide, and native plants and grasses from the wetlands further enhance the natural design.

Onni Marina Shores is just one of several apartment projects planned in Long Beach on the Pacific Coast Highway. During the same meeting, Carmel Partners also received approval for its planned 390-unit residential project at 6615 Pacific Coast Highway.

Onni Group initially purchased the development site for $68 million nearly two years ago, according to previous reporting from The Registry.
